January 2020 – The Safe Routes to School Conference that was held November 12-14, 2019 at the Hilton Tampa Downtown was nearly a sell out! Over 425 transportation professionals and public safety advocates from across the country came together to exchange ideas and share knowledge. Safe Routes to School has improved sidewalks and street crossings for children who walk to and from school. One of the highlights of the event was a walk across the Rampello K-8 Magnet School’s newly painted crosswalk, located at the intersection of Jefferson and Washington in Downtown Tampa. The Gulf Coast Safe Streets Summit, held in conjunction with the conference, welcomed approximately 110 attendees. The State Safety Engineers meeting was held November 12, and the Federal Highway Administration also had its Safety Target Setting Workshop in Tampa during this week as well. Whether it’s getting children to and from school safely, keeping pedestrians and bicyclists safe, or utilizing other modes to arrive at destinations safely, all of these recent events show the dedication to reducing the number of fatalities and serious injuries, and planning for safer streets.
